Drama Queens and Non-Profit Groups - Personality Problems and Denial Are Pervasive
If you have ever talked with anyone who has worked in a non-profit group you have no doubt heard incredible stories of ego and emotional outbursts. Believe me, it's real and some of the craziest people work in the non-profit sector, it truly amazing and somewhat unfortunate. Rather than working towards a common cause they allow their incidental political, religious and social beliefs to run wild.
My question is why aren't there more classes available for those who wish to work in the non-profit sector? If more of these groups ran them like a business, with better controls and less ego-driven fits, they could sure to a lot better. Of course, it's hard to expect someone who has never been in business to run a tight-ship non-profit group. If you have ever worked in the non-profit sector and seen the unbelievable drama behind the scenes then surely you too have shaken your head in disgust.
Why is it that the drama queens of the world find their way into the non-profit sector so often? In fact these issues are so common and personality problems so pervasive that such issues should be brought to the attention of all the donors who give. If they only knew the reality, would they indeed still give? This is a very good question, some may say yes, others who have worked in some of these non-profit groups both large and small, tell donors to not give anymore.
To deny this reality would be wrong, and this is one of the large challenges that non-profit groups face. If the non-profit groups would stay true to their case and dump all the emotional baggage, not only would they raise more money, but they would have a stronger team to grow their endeavors and increase awareness for their cause, without turning others off to their mission.
